Prevention and Treatment

Even if no eye or vision problems are apparent, we still recommend scheduling your baby’s first eye assessment at 6 months. Things that we will test for include excessive or unequal amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, eye movement ability and ocular health assessment. We usually utilize a longer lasting dilating eye drops to relax the eye muscles to determine the refractive error. These problems are not common, but it is important to identify children who have them at this young age. Vision development and eye health problems are easier to correct if treatment begins early.

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, causes distant objects such as the board in a classroom and a clock on the wall to appear blurry or out of focus.  It affects 30% of the population.

Farsightedness, also known as long-sightedness or hyperopia, causes near and even distance objects or images to appear blurry.  A farsighted person usually has headaches and eyestraining.

Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, typically affects the vision or visual function of the affected eye, causing blurry vision even with corrective eyewear. The condition also commonly presents with reduced visual skills, poor depth perception, and reading difficulties.  It can be correctable with early intervention.

Strabismus, also known as eye turn or lazy eye. If an eye turns inward, outward, upward or downward, that is a sign of strabismus, a visual problem that occurs in 2% to 5% of American children.  Eye surgery and vision therapy can help with this condition.

Retinoblastoma is a rare eye cancer that forms in the retina. It is most common in children younger than age 5.  Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent vision loss and stop the cancer from spreading.
