Child with Contact Lens

Myopia Control (Management) Services

What is Myopia?

Myopia (nearsightedness) is a condition that is associated with blurred vision at a distance. The image is focused in front of the retina either the lens in the eye has too much power or the length of the eye is too long.

How does it happen?

It is associated with computer/cell phone use, reading, indoor lifestyle and family history. The defocusing of the peripheral vision when doing near work triggers elongation of the eye.

Why should I fix it and how?

Increasing amounts of myopia is associated with an increased risk of sight-threatening eye diseases such as glaucoma, retinal detachment and macular degeneration.

Vision Plus Renton offers three programs for myopia management.

  • Atropine Program

  • Brilliant Futures Myopia Management Program (MiSight)

  • Ortho-k Management Program

Atropine Program

Atropine ophthalmic is a long-term medication that causes relaxation of the eye muscles to reduce myopia progression. The Atropine Program prescribes patients to use one drop per eye daily, in addition to wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses during the day.

Studies have shown that with low doses of Atropine ophthalmic, myopia progression is reduced by 50%. The Atropine program is considered the best solution for younger children who are too young for other myopia programs (i.e. Orthokeatology or multifocal/MiSight 1 day contact lenses).

Brilliant Futures/MiSight Program (MiSight)

MiSight 1 day contact lenses are the only FDA approved soft daily contact lenses to slow the progression of myopia in children. The two zones design with alternating distance and treatment corrections effectively lower myopia progression in young children. It also effectively reduces myopia progression by 50%.

Ortho-k Management Program

Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, are specially designed oxygen permeable therapeutic contact lenses. Ortho-k is a sophisticated non-surgical process that temporarily reshapes the cornea overnight. During the day, patients are to remove their contact lenses and go about their day without any other vision correction.
